War breaks out Russia vs Ukraine: European Union sends weapons to Ukraine, Ukraine is controlled by Russia

In response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said for the first time that the European Union would "fund the purchase and delivery of weapons and other equipment to a country under attack".

In addition to sending weapons, the EU has imposed three new sanctions which include a ban on Russian aircraft in EU airspace, a ban on "Kremlin media machines", as well as widening sanctions on Belarus.

Until now Russian missiles are still attacking Ukraine. In fact, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister reported that a number of missiles fired from Belarus hit the airport in the city of Zhytomyr, northern Ukraine.

After successfully launching the invasion, the Russians claimed that a number of their soldiers had died in the fighting. However, Russia declined to say the number.

Because the attack from Russia still continued on Sunday (27/02) early Sunday, Western countries immediately pledged assistance to strengthen Ukraine's defense system.

Sweden will send 5,000 anti-tank guns, 5,000 body armor, 5,000 helmets and 135,000 ration packages.

The delivery of arms to a country in conflict, according to Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, is Sweden's first time since the Soviet Union's invasion of Finland in 1939.

Germany will send 1,000 anti-tank guns and 500 Stinger missiles to Ukraine.

As the BBC's Damien McGuinness reports, the move is arguably the biggest change in German foreign policy since World War II. Prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, such a military move had never occurred to Germany.

In another development:

The US State Department said it would ship $350 million worth of weapons systems - including Javelin anti-tank missiles, anti-aircraft systems and body protection devices.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands announced it would supply 50 Panzerfaust-3 anti-tank guns and 400 rockets.
